Dog Etiquette While on the Road

Taking dogs on the road means you will have to find accommodations that will welcome your furry friends. Many pet-friendly hotels have changed their pet-loving policies due to the disregard of irresponsible pet owners. Knowing and keeping yourself aware of pet etiquette can make the difference in being welcomed and even invited back and being asked to leave. Follow these tips to make the best of your trip for you, your pet as well as others you'll come in contact with.

  • Never show up with a dog unannounced without checking the pet policies where you'll be staying.

  • Keep identification on your dog as well as recent photos and vet records in your luggage.

  • Keep your dog on a leash when out of the hotel room to respect other guests as well as protect your pet.

  • Bring your dog's comfort items such as bedding, toys, treats, water/food bowls, etc.

  • If your dog barks frequently, other guests might be disturbed, so consider leaving your dog at home.

  • After walking your dog, clean up after their mess.

  • If leaving your dog in your room alone, keep them contained since maids will likely service your room. Also, leave on a television or radio to keep them company.

  • Bring covers for furniture or beds to keep shedding to a minimum. Lint brushes work great to remove hair from the room.

  • Consider feeding your dog in the bathroom and avoid carpet to minimize messes while eating and drinking.

  • Be considerate of others when they are around your dog. Many will reach to touch your dog and might frighten him, causing him to nip at the stranger.

You can minimize problems by taking a few precautions. Remember, it is better to avoid injury rather than enter a legal battle.

Keeping these tips in mind while traveling with your dog can make a much more pleasant trip for everyone. Others will greatly appreciate your consideration and your dog will enjoy the vacation as much as anyone will. Taking a few precautions can make it a better trip for everyone.
